Red River Librarian Trey Lewis told the gathering they were seeing if there was any interest in forming a Friends of the Library group. Judging by the turnout there is.
The meeting room at the library was well filled with 27 interested persons, including three members of the library Board of Control, in addition to several staffers. Norma Lester chaired the meeting that several citizens had called to see what the level of public interest is in forming the friends group. Lester said, “My main goal is to raise awareness of the library and what it can offer to the public. What can we do to get people interested in using this marvelous facility we have in Red River Parish.”
But what would they do? That took up much of the meeting including discussions of increasing activities at the library for seniors, children, specific groups such as genealogy, and a long list of other things.
It was established that the Friends would have to be funded through their efforts and that no funding would come from the library itself. There would be no mixing of public tax dollars and money raised by the volunteers. However, both groups would cooperate to carry out any projects they decide on.
An Organizational meeting for the Friends Group will be held this Thursday, February 16th at 1:00 pm. Everyone is invited to come and take part.
