JROTC Shooting Competition

On 28-29 January a team of cadets from Red River High School JROTC traveled to Alexandria to compete in the LA State JROTC Air Rifle Championship.  The competitors included:

Alexander Youngblood,  AKA “Eagle-Eye”

Terry Adams, AKA “Sure-Shot”

Jour’ja Jackson, AKA “Irish Gunfighter”

Draven Castie, AKA “Dutchboy Marksman”

Sydni Tingle-Smith, AKA “Catfish Hunter”

Kenya Smith, AKA “Bullseye”,

Shalayjah Gillum, AKA “Closet Athlete”

Nathan Dyer, AKA “ADND”

This was the Red River High School rifle-team’s first competition.  In fact, several of the cadets had never even touched a firearm of any kind until two weeks prior when the team started practicing for this competition.  The tournament was hosted by the Federal Government’s Civilian Marksmanship Program and included 160 competitors on teams from all over the Louisiana.  The course of fire included three rounds of 20 shots each from the prone (laying down), standing, and kneeling positions.  While the team did not place in the competition, they made a good showing for their first competition.  The high score shooter for the team was Kenya Smith with a score of 316 which as just 24 points short of a marksmanship award.  Second best on the team was Shalayjah Gillum with a 278.  The competition made for some long days, but all of the students truly enjoyed the experience and came out of it with big smiles and an appreciation for the shooting sports.  All of the cadets are excited to continue shooting and improving.

Thank you Col. Duffield for taking these cadets and getting these pictures.
