On Saturday, September 24, the Lady Rebel softball team traveled to Sterlington, LA, to begin play in the Class 2A South Tournament. They went 2-1 on the day, which automatically qualified them for the state tournament. They will complete the South 2A Tournament on Monday, September 26, to determine their seeding for the state tournament.
In game one, the Lady Rebels defeated defending state champs Humphreys Academy in a dominating 15-0 3-inning victory. Senior Jessie Kate Cobb got the win on the mound, striking out 6 batters and allowing only one hit. Freshman Hanna Catherine Huddleston made her varsity pitching debut, pitching 2/3 of an inning, allowing only one hit.
Huddleston also had the hot bat for the Rebels, going 2 for 3 with a double, 5 RBIs and scored 3 runs. Cobb and Jadyn King each went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs each. Haylee Smith was 1 for 3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Kylie Donald had an RBI and scored a run. Other runs scored were Mary Claire Jones and Chloe Jordan with 3 runs each and Emma Clemons and Julia Grace Riggs with 1 run each. Jordan stole 2 bases, while Cobb, Huddleston, and Donald each stole a base.
In their second game of the day, the Lady Rebels faced the district 2 #1 seed, Prentiss Christian, and despite a great effort, fell 11-6. Freshman Julia Grace Riggs went 2 for 4 and had a moment she will never forget as she hit her first homerun over the left field fence. Riggs also had an RBI and scored a run. King was 3 for 4 with a double. Donald was 2 for 3 and scored a run, and Smith doubled and scored a run. Clemons doubled and had an RBI, and Cobb had a hit, an RBI, and scored a run. Huddleston and Jones each had a hit and scored a run. Jordan had an RBI. Maddie Baxley, Emma Giddings, and Donald each had a stolen base.
The Lady Rebels came back strong in their third game of the day, defeating Tensas 11-1 and guaranteeing themselves a spot in the state tournament. Cobb went all 5 innings and got the win, striking out 7 batters and allowing only one hit. Jones had 2 triples with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Huddleston also had 2 triples with an RBI and a run scored. Donald doubled and scored a run, while Jordan singled, had an RBI, and scored 3 runs. Smith singled and scored 2 runs, while Riggs and King each singled and scored a run. Cobb also had a hit for the Lady Rebels.
The Lady Rebels travel back to Sterlington on Monday, September 26, to take on Sharkey-Issaquena at 11:00 a.m. Good luck to our Lady Rebel softball team!
