On June 6-9, 2022, volunteers at Riverdale Academy held a basketball camp for students in grades kindergarten through eighth. The camp focused on fundamentals, teamwork, and learning through fun games. The camp was organized by Riverdale alum Joedy Wiggins, Sr. and his wife, first grade teacher Lauren. Other counselors for the week were Taylor Yount, Cody Hillman, Madison Chamberlin, Jadyn King, Mary Claire Jones, and Thad Bates.
Each day the campers worked on fundamentals, played games such as knock out, hot shot, and free throw contests, and divided into teams to play 5 on 5 games. Kindergarten through 3rd grade went to the morning session. 1st session award winners were as follows: K-1st Knockout, Free Throw, and Hot Shot – Joedy Wiggins, Jr.; 2nd-3rd Knockout winner and Free Throw winner – P.J. Guidry; 2nd-3rd Hot Shot winner – Grant Halbmaier. Most Hustle runner up was Kiptin Williams, and Most Hustle was Gardner Edwards. Best Attitude runner up was Annelise Cason, and Best Attitude was John Warren Perkins. Most Improved runner up was Araya Dortlon, and Most Improved was Grant Halbmaier. Offensive MVP runner up was Joedy Wiggins Jr. and Offensive MVP was Gage Giddings. Defensive MVP runner up was P.J. Guidry, and Defensive MVP was Kennedi Bonner.
4th-8th grades went to the afternoon session. 4th and 5th grade contest winners were Free Throw Champ-Sophia Pickett; Hot Shot Champ – Milton Guidry; and Knockout Champ – Easton Cason. 6th-8th grade contest winners were Free Throw Champ – Kaden McNeely; Hot Shot Champ – Krista Mancil; and Knockout Champ – Abbie Jowers. Most Hustle runner up was Madelyn Chamberlin, and Most Hustle was Ally Kate Hillman. Best Attitude runner up was Abbie Jowers, and Best Attitude was Milton Guidry. Most Improved runner up was Easton Cason, and Most Improved was Brayden Caswell. Offensive MVP runner up was Caden Spradley, and Offensive MVP was Hayden Cason. Defensive MVP runner up was Bryson Raney, and Defensive MVP was Kaden McNeely.
This was a great opportunity for students, and we are so glad summer basketball camp was back at Riverdale. Thank you to all of the volunteers, campers, and parents who made this possible!
