4-H Plans for Fall

By 4-H Agent Jacque Fontenot

Red River Parish 4-H is very excited to begin a brand new, one of a kind, school year!  All summer, 4-H has offered virtual activities and contests, as well as virtual 4-H University.  As always, our main goal is to do what we can to support students, families, and school staff as they begin a very different type of year.  Starting in September 4-H will begin to offer club meetings throughout the parish.  Our focus this year is Nutrition from the Garden.  Students who attend Riverdale will have regular 4-H meetings at school, offered to K-12 grade students.  4-H is offering many choices for students who homeschool, virtual school, or attend public schools.  Students will have the option of attending monthly club meetings at the 4-H office by grade level or with their siblings.  As of right now, we can have up to 25 students at a time at our office with masks.  Morning and evening times will be available for club meetings to accommodate families.   There will also be a google classroom set up for all 4-H members.  All students who enroll in 4-H will receive a Red River 4-H mask.  In addition to club meetings, 4-H will continue to offer contests, events, and project clubs.  Livestock and Shooting sports will continue as usual.  Two new project clubs this year are What’s on Your Plate Kitchen Club and the Furr-H Animal Club for all ages.  Junior leaders, a service club for 7-12 grade students will continue to meet, starting in September with a back to school event.  4-H also has many enrichment programs that teachers can use in their classrooms.  These programs are standards based and cover topics such as Louisiana Wetlands (grades 3-12 Science), Incubating Education (3rd & 8th grade Science), Stand Strong (Bullying Prevention, grades 3-5), LYFE (Financial Education, 9-12 grades), and many others.  We can find curriculum that will fit your needs.  We also know that there will be some difficulties getting used to learning virtually and getting used to Google Classroom.  Once school starts, the 4-H office is offering assistance with technology or academics.  Parents can call the 4-H office and sign up for times to come and get help catching back up if they get behind in a subject.

There are several ways to enroll in 4-H.  Enrollment forms mailed during the summer can be brought to the 4-H office with $3.  They can also be picked up from the 4-H office.  We will also hold a 4-H sign up day on Saturday, August 29th, from 9-11 AM at the park.  Students will get to enroll in 4-H, learn about different project clubs in 4-H, and enter for door prizes.

At 4-H, we are excited to show you the many things that we have to offer our families in Red River Parish.
