On Friday, October 8, the Riverdale Academy Rebels traveled to Homer to take on the class 2A Claiborne Academy Rebels. Riverdale is playing without senior Monroe McCarty, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last week in the football game against Franklin. With McCarty out, the Rebels stepped up big and almost defeated Claiborne. The score was tied 36-36 with 33.6 seconds left in the game. Unfortunately, CA scored a touchdown, and Riverdale couldn’t answer. The final score was 42-36 in favor of Claiborne.
The Rebel offense had 228 offensive yards and 117 kickoff return yards, for a total of 345 yards on the night. Sophomore Ryder Huddleston was 8 for 17 in passing for 167 yards and 2 touchdowns. Junior Ben Almond had 3 receptions for 36 yards. Senior Ty “Bones” Jones had 4 receptions for 16 yards and a touchdown. Senior Jake Messenger had 3 receptions for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jones also had 2 kickoff returns for 117 yards and 1 touchdown. Messenger had 14 rushes for 51 yards, and Huddleston had 6 rushes for 10 yards and a touchdown.
The defense stepped up big against a very solid Claiborne offense. Messenger was huge on defense with 5 solo tackles, 6 assists (4 TFL), and 1 PBU. Almond added 3 solo tackles, 3 assists (1 TFL), and had 4 crucial PBU’s. Jones had 2 solo tackles, 10 assists, ½ sack (3 TFL), and 1 PBU. Huddleston had 4 solo tackles, 7 assists (1 TFL), and 1 interception for 40 yards. Senior Denver Williams had 2 solo tackles and 3 assists (2 TFL.). Junior James Wagoner had 3 assists, and junior Tyler Parker had 2 solo tackles. Sophomore Kyle Guillory had a solo tackle and 6 assists, while sophomore Hayden Hillman had 4 assists, ½ sack (2 TFL), and his first career blocked punt.
The Rebels will face another tough opponent this Friday night as WCCA travels to Riverdale for a district contest. Both Riverdale and WCCA are undefeated in district play, so it should be a great game. This will also be senior night for our senior football players and senior cheerleaders. Senior presentations will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by kickoff at 7:30 at Marston Stadium. Please join our Rebel family as we keep Monroe in our prayers as he has his knee surgery this Wednesday. Come out and support your senior and the Rebels Friday night!
