Help is available for persons approaching Medicare eligibility or for persons needing assistance with other Medicare issues. The Caddo Council on Aging works with the Red River Council on Aging to provide information services to the parish.
Bridget Lyman of the Caddo Council told the Journal they could explain options available as people approach enrollment age. They help with understanding the different Medicare programs, what Part A is as well as what is available through Parts B and D.
“Helping people stay in their home is one focus,” said Lyman. She adds, “People with disabilities and who have been on social security disability for two years can shift to Medicare services. And you don’t have to wait until age 65 to qualify.”
During Medicare’s open enrollment period they assist with explanation of the various Part D (drug plan) choices. They review costs, medications covered by each plan and other factors that change from year to year. Lyman said, “We help seniors look at the plans available in their area and we help them decide which is best for their situation.”
Another service they offer is helping people qualify for various programs that may assist with paying for Medicare costs. These are options that complement Medicare. As Lyman put it “People come in really confused. They are educated people but have difficulty understanding the various aspects of confusing Medicare provisions. We have trained people to assist residents of Red River Parish.”
