CHRISTUS Health: A mammogram today can make a difference tomorrow

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and CHRISTUS Health is reminding women across the Ark-La-Tex that regular mammograms remain one of the most effective tools for detecting breast cancer early, when it is often easier to treat.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. women and the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women.

“Many women feel healthy and may not think a screening mammogram is urgent, but breast cancer does not always present symptoms in its earliest stages,” said Dr. Daphanie Taylor, medical oncologist with CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System in Texarkana. “A routine mammogram can identify changes long before they can be felt, which may lead to earlier treatment options and better outcomes. Taking time for preventive care today could make a significant difference in your future health.”

CHRISTUS Health recommends women begin annual breast cancer screenings at age 40.

Women who have a higher-than-average risk of breast cancer may need to begin screening earlier or receive additional screening, depending on factors such as family history, genetic risk and other health considerations.

“Breast cancer screening is not one-size-fits-all,” said Dr. Neelima Chintapalli, hematology and oncology specialist with CHRISTUS Cancer Center in Shreveport-Bossier. “Understanding your personal risk factors and having conversations with your health care provider are important parts of developing the right screening plan.”

Health experts say women sometimes postpone screenings because of busy schedules, family obligations or concerns about making time for an appointment.

“Women often prioritize the needs of everyone around them and delay taking care of themselves,” Chintapalli said. “A mammogram is a relatively quick screening that can provide valuable information about your health. We encourage women to make themselves a priority and schedule their annual mammogram.”

Mammography services are available throughout the CHRISTUS Health ministry across the Ark-La-Tex. In addition, CHRISTUS Breast Center in Shreveport and CHRISTUS Bossier Emergency Hospital are offering extended mammography hours, including Saturday appointments, to provide patients with greater flexibility and improved access to screenings during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
