EAST POINT – The Riverdale Academy football team faced a tall task when they traveled Friday to a Wilkinson County Christian squad that went undefeated in the 2025 regular season.

The Rams kept that unbeaten regular season streak alive with a 42-6 win against Riverdale, but judging the Rebels just on the final score wouldn’t tell the whole story.

Riverdale almost didn’t have a football team at all this season, and new head coach and Riverdale alumnus Denver Williams said just seeing the ‘R’ back on the football field is a victory of sorts.

“Being able to see Riverdale jerseys on the field is a blessing,” Williams said. “Going from not having a team to scraping one together in the last few weeks, we knew it’d be tough going to play WCCA.

“There was a lot of heart on the field. It’s the first time this team has played together, and now we see the areas we have to improve on. We’ll work on blocking and reacting to the ball on defense.”

New quarterback Jayden Jones tossed a touchdown to Cannon Breedlove in fourth quarter to put the Rebels on the board.

Williams said Jones, who is also a starting linebacker, missed the first half because of an injury on the opening kickoff, but he did return as the Rebels started to make headway in the second half.

WCCA scored on their opening possession before Riverdale lost starting running back/linebacker Brody Tong on the Rebels’ first offensive drive.

Tong also returned in the second half, but Riverdale didn’t have enough firepower on its 12-player roster to keep pace with the Rams in that first half.

The Rams (1-0) have won their last 10 regular-season games dating back to the beginning of the 2025 campaign.

The Rebels (0-1) will get another crack at it this coming week when they welcome River Oaks (1-0) to East Point on Friday.

“My guys are ready to get back to work and get better,” Williams said.
