Louisiana families receiving SNAP benefits can now earn additional food assistance simply by purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables.
Through the Louisiana Carrot Initiative, SNAP recipients receive a 30-cent bonus for every $1 spent on fresh produce at participating Walmart and Walmart Neighborhood Market locations across the state. The bonus is automatically added back to the shopper’s EBT card and can later be used to purchase SNAP-eligible food items. Participants can earn up to $25 in bonus benefits each month.
The program was launched by the Louisiana Department of Health to encourage healthier eating habits while helping families stretch their grocery budgets. State officials say the initiative rewards healthy choices and makes fresh fruits and vegetables more affordable for Louisiana households. Since the program began in 2025, SNAP recipients have earned more than $1.6 million in bonus benefits.
The bonus is applied automatically when eligible shoppers purchase fresh fruits and vegetables using their SNAP benefits. No application or additional registration is required. Shoppers simply use their EBT card at checkout, and the bonus benefits are added to their account.
The initiative comes as Louisiana continues to promote healthier food choices through its SNAP program. Earlier this year, the state implemented restrictions on using SNAP benefits to purchase soft drinks, energy drinks, and candy.
State health officials hope the produce incentive will help more families incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables into their diets while improving long-term health outcomes across Louisiana.
