Friday November 11th is Veterans Day. It has been celebrated to remember those men and women who have served in the US armed forces. The celebration after World War I as Armistice Day. The name was later changed to include all vets from all wars.
Locally the Coushatta VFW Post and Auxiliary 7287 are joining with Red River High’s JROTC cadets to observe Veterans Day. Friday begins about 8:15 am at Springville Cemetery with vets and cadets placing American flags on the graves of veterans.
Then at 10:30 am, everyone moved to Red River Storage, the climate controlled storage units on US 71 at Esperanza Road. The VFW Post and Auxiliary maintains the flag that flys there 25/7. The present flag is becoming faded and worn and is in need of replacement.
Auxiliary member Susie Swayze has purchased a new flag in honor of her late husband, Ricky Swayze. He had been involved with the original construction of that flag pole some years ago.
Members of the VFW and Auxiliary and the JROTC detachment will replace the flag in a brief ceremony at 10:30. Members of the public are invited to join in these Veterans Day actitities.
