Harris on Coaching

Red River Boys Basketball has co-coaches this season.  Longtime coach Keith Johnson is retiring after the season and Dadrian Harris will take over next year.  For the 2020-21 campaign they are sharing coaching responsibilities.  Already Coach Harris is being noticed for his style and demeanor courtside.  And that inspired Coach Harris to record a couple of his observations.

As a coach, I don’t say much at all to the referees. I control what I can control and that’s my team. I have a real passion for what I do, and it’s a great feeling when people notice.

Today, 2 referees approached me with affirmations.

Referee 1: “Coach, I love the way you coach your team. You’re coaching and teaching at the same time, and they respond so well to you. I could referee your games all day long.

Referee 2: “Hey Coach, you’re doing a great job with your boys. I’ve been refereeing for many years and I’ve never seen a coach control the game and your team like you do. Keep doing what you’re doing.”

I don’t coach for validation from anyone, but it is good to hear positive feedback. I’d like to say, I believe I’m going in the right direction. It’s not about me and never will be, but it’s about those young men that wear those Red River uniforms night in and night out. I do it to help them become young men of character and achieve.

That’s Coach Harris beginning a post-game celebration with his team as the buzzer sounded sealing another Bulldog victory.
