Friday Last Day to Qualify

Qualifying for local elected office will close at 4:30 today, July 24th.  Candidates will qualify at the Clerk of Court’s office in the Courthouse.

So far, most local officials have qualified for re-election.  And as of 4:30 Thursday most have no opposition. 

The only local race that will be held, so far, is for a seat on the Coushatta Town Council.  There are 5 council seats and everyone runs at large.  The five incumbents have qualified.  They are Peter Drake, Janice Lewis, Brian Nash, Reginald Prealow, Jr., and Edna Webb.  Challenger John D. Henry has also qualified.

Johnny Cox has qualified and is unopposed for Mayor of Coushatta.  Vince Almond is the only candidate qualifying for Mayor of Edgefield.  Assistant District Attorney Luke Mitchell qualified for District 39 Judge.  Julie Jones filed for re-election as District Attorney.

There are several Justice of the Peace District seats to be elected.  No one has qualified for District A.  Randy Thomas, Jr. qualified for District B.  And Michael Perkins qualified for District C.

Three Constable Justice of the Peace Districts are up for the fall election.  So far only District A has a challenger.  Candidates for District A are Jerry Clark and Earl Webb, Jr.  Randy Thomas, Sr. is unopposed for District B and Sharon Bradley is unopposed for District C.

You have until qualifying closes at 4:30 pm today if you are interested in running for public office.  Qualifications for each office may be found on the Secretary of State’s website.
