The Red River Parish Health Unit is a part of the Louisiana Department of Health. The Journal spoke with the Nursing Supervisor, Yashica Turner, RN about the medical reasons behind wearing a mask and social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Science proves a mask reduces the risk,” said Turner. And she said the Region 7 Director of the Office of Public Health, Dr. Martha Whyte agrees. Turner said, “If you don’t wear a mask you could be hurting someone else or you could take the virus back to someone else.”
There is much discussion on social media and in local media on the effectiveness of masks and the potential harm they could present to an individual. The Health Department’s position is counter to this. We asked Turner if masks present a problem for people.
“If they have an underlying medical condition such as asthma it could be more difficult to breathe with a mask,” Turner said. But she was quick to add, “If you have these issues you should be at home, not out in public. You should be at home as much as possible.”
The Journal asked about social distancing, if that is beneficial. Turner said, “Social distance as much as possible outside of being with members of your household. Respect other people and give six feet. Don’t get into their space. Ask them to respect your space and stay back.”
Turner said, “Social distancing and mask wearing is backed by scientific evidence of disease transmission.”
Currently the Red River Parish Health Unit is closed for in-person services such as injections at present. Turner said, “They are still doing the WIC Nutrition Program for pregnant women, infants and children up to age 5. And we are still doing the shot records. Only service now is by drive up, not in person.”
