President Donald Trump has signed the bill by Louisiana Senator John Kennedy to extend the National Flood Insurance Plan. Kennedy ‘s bill kept the program from expiring last Friday.
“The NFIP is a safety net for millions of Americans, and we could not afford to let it lapse,” said Sen. Kennedy. “This is another short-term fix, but it buys us two weeks to keep the program functioning until we can pass a longer extension. We need to pass the disaster supplemental package as soon as possible to ensure the NFIP’s viability as we enter hurricane season.”
The extension is only two weeks in length. Kennedy said it would bridge the gap so there would be no break in coverage for Louisiana residents. Hurricane season is just getting underway and flooding from the Red River and the Mississippi are a possibility this spring.
