Peter Drakes Honored as Red River Parish’s Unsung Hero

Red River Parish resident Peter Drakes was recognized Saturday, Sept. 26, as the parish’s Unsung Hero during the Louisiana Unity Gala held at Bally’s Casino Resort in Shreveport.

The event, presented by the Louisiana Democratic Party’s Congressional District 4 organization, was held under the theme “Bridging Our Future: Unity in Strength | Community in Connection.” The gala recognized individuals described by organizers as people who have served their local communities.

Drakes, 92, was honored for his years of service and contributions to the Red River Parish community.

Shunguanette Banks and Brenda Iverson represented Red River Parish at the gala and presented Drakes with the recognition. Banks shared photos of the award and Drakes following the event.

The plaque presented to Drakes reads:
“Louisiana Democratic Party
Congressional District 4
Red River Parish
Unsung Hero Award
Proudly Present to Peter Drakes.”

It also carries the gala theme, “Bridging Our Future: Unity in Strength, Community in Connection,” and a message recognizing the importance of building bridges between generations.

Banks said Drakes continues to serve as an example of dedication to his community.

“At the remarkable age of 92 years young, Mr. Drakes continues to be a shining example of service, dedication, and commitment to our community,” Banks wrote following the event.

She added that the recognition was an opportunity to celebrate Drakes while he could personally receive the honor.
“It is truly a blessing to still have Mr. Drakes with us, allowing us the opportunity to honor him and give him his flowers while he can receive them,” she wrote.

The Louisiana Unity Gala featured Louisiana State Rep. Rashid Young as keynote speaker.

For Red River Parish, the evening provided public recognition of a longtime resident whose community service has spanned generations.
