Fall is in the air! Our world around us is changing colors, and our native plants are getting ready for the cooler weather, just like we are. On Saturday, October 3rd, beginning at 11:00, Erin Staub and other members of the Louisiana Wild Society will be visiting us for a session on native plants as a follow-up to her session back in June. Erin writes, “Winter is such a special and essential time of rest and slowing down in nature.” She invites gardeners and those who care about the natural world to “come learn how to tuck in your garden (or leave it untucked!) for winter while keeping pollinators and other ecological factors in mind, as well as learning about all the amazing essential creatures that are spending winter sleeping in your stems!” All are invited to come and learn more about the needs of our gardens. This session, like all our programs, is free, and light refreshments will be served. We also have several books in our library that were purchased because they were recommended by the Louisiana Wild Society. There is a lot of information out there right now, on the news and in the newspapers, about artificial intelligence, referred to as AI. Many people do not know much about AI, and they are often confused and even a little scared of the capability of computer systems to imitate intelligent (or unintelligent) human behavior. Our library is very lucky to have a friend who can help us understand AI and help us learn how to use AI effectively. On Tuesday, October 13, Tobin DeVille of DeVille Training Connection will be here to answer our questions, such as:
- What is AI?
- How Can I access AI at home?
- What is the difference between Google and AI?
- What are the top generative AI assistants?
Are you curious about AI but not sure where to start? The session will be at 10:00 — 12:00 Tuesday morning, October 13, in the meeting room at the library for AI Step 1, a beginner-friendly workshop. Learn what AI is, how it differs from a Google search, how to use it at home, and get hands-on time exploring today’s top AI assistants. Computers will be provided, or bring your own. All are invited to attend this workshop, and you can call the library at 318-932-5614 if you have any questions.
Following the morning session on AI, there will be a session beginning at 2:00 on Internet Phishing. Don’t get hooked by online scams! Join us to learn what phishing is, how to spot a suspicious email, how to tell what is legitimate, and simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your information. You may attend both of these sessions, morning and afternoon, or you may attend only one—AI in the morning at 10:00 or Phishing at 2:00. Both workshops are free, and light refreshments will be served.
Finally, on Friday, October 30, from 4:00 to 6:00, all are invited to our annual Halloween Party in the meeting room at the library. Come see our decorations, get some candy, and take as many pictures as you like. All are invited, and, Parents, please remember that you or another responsible adult must accompany your children.
