A young Red River Parish native is getting an early look at state government after being offered a position with the Louisiana Legislature.

Jemarcus Latson, a 2025 graduate of Red River High School and sophomore at Grambling State University, is working as a legislative assistant for State Rep. Joy Walters of District 4. The Louisiana House currently lists Latson as one of Walters’ legislative assistants.

Latson said the opportunity came through a chance meeting with Walters at an event at Grambling. He did not apply for the position. The two stayed in contact, and Walters eventually offered him the job.

“I was honored when she offered me the position,” Latson said.

At Grambling, Latson has served as the Sophomore Class Senator in the Student Government Association and has been a member of the university band. He said those experiences have helped him develop leadership skills and a better understanding of representing others.

Latson said his roots in Red River Parish remain important to him. He credits his mother, Jasmine Latson, his late grandmother, Marie Carroll, and his godparents, Pastor Jimmie and Lady Thelma Mitchell, with supporting and encouraging him.

His work in the Capitol gives him an opportunity to learn about the legislative process, assist with constituent services and see public service firsthand.

“I am proud to come from Red River Parish,” Latson said. “I hope my journey encourages other young people from rural communities to pursue their goals and remain open to unexpected opportunities.”
