COUSHATTA – Red River football didn’t have the home opener it planned for Friday as Tioga’s early momentum propelled the Indians to a 49-12 win at Pat Strother Stadium.

A pair of Indians’  defensive touchdowns combined with efficient offensive possessions set the tone for the big win to open the season.

“Our offense looked OK in spots, but we were very inconsistent, which comes with a lot of new faces,” said Red River coach Travis Gary. “Tioga’s two defensive scores and their ability to convert on a couple of third-and-longs allowed them to get the early momentum.”

Both programs were replacing three-year starters at quarterback, but Red River’s Landon Wilson was scratched because of injury.

That put Ashton Johnson under center in the first game of the season on an already youthful offense, which contributed to early turnovers.

Tioga (1-0) cashed in with a flurry of first-half scores, putting the game out of reach quickly.

Johnson did find Lathyn Lewis for a touchdown before Jacarvis Speed scored the final touchdown of the game.

Gary said Tioga’s play of the offense and defensive lines was crucial to their success.

The Indians touted one of the most explosive offenses in the state this past year, and Tioga looks to be back in that class with new quarterback Ronnie Stevens.

Red River’s defense did what it could to slow the Indians down, but Gary said that unit will continue to improve as the season goes on.

“The defense just has to settle in and trust the process,” Gary said. “We have thrown a lot at them, and it won’t be easier, but the sharpest blades are forged in the hottest fires.

“That’s what we are working toward as a team.”

The Bulldogs are back at home Friday against St. Mary’s, who topped Vidalia in the opener.
