Red River firefighters responded to two separate emergency calls Sunday evening, with the second call coming just as crews were preparing to leave the scene of the first.

The first call came at approximately 6:15 p.m. for a house fire on Highway 507. This fire was contained quickly and firefighters were preparing to clear the scene when another call came in.

Crews were dispatched to a vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 71 and Wilkinson Street. When firefighters arrived, one of the vehicles was fully engulfed in flames.

The Coushatta Police Department worked to maintain traffic flow and investigate the accident while firefighters concentrated on extinguishing the vehicle fire.

A witness who was walking in the area said he was almost to Dairy Queen when he heard the crash behind him. He said he turned and saw an 18-wheeler attempting to stop as a black car spun in the roadway and burst into flames.

According to the witness, the driver of the car was able to get out on his own. The driver told him that his brakes had failed, causing the car to enter the traffic lane.

The witness said the 18-wheeler struck and ran over the car before stopping in front of the Red River Cafe.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. No additional information about injuries was available at the time of publication.
