Northwestern State University’s School of Business is seeking donations of new and gently used professional clothing for students interviewing for their first professional jobs and/or internships. The School maintains a Business Boutique for students to select professional attire at no charge. The Business Boutique is just one of NSU’s career-ready initiatives. The University’s Career Center presents a Career Fair each semester, along with a Career Prep Week to coach students on networking, resume writing and reviews, mock interviews, professional etiquette and dressing for success. Donations to the Business Boutique can be dropped off at the School of Business office in Russell Hall Room 201A. Louisiana Downs announced that all races scheduled for this week have been cancelled due to the extreme heat. Missed races will be rescheduled for select Sundays in September (13, 20, & 27).

On Saturday, September 26, in Shreveport, the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities will host an Institute for Louisiana Culture and History workshop for social studies K–12 educators in Northwest Louisiana. This regional workshop will focus on Louisiana’s Colonial-era history in alignment with the Louisiana Department of Education’s latest sixth-grade social studies standards. The workshop will provide Louisiana public school social studies educators with the opportunity to build their content knowledge by engaging with historians and participating in social studies working sessions exploring how to use expanded standards-aligned content found on LEH’s 64 Parishes Encyclopedia in the classroom. The institute will provide a $150 stipend to all regional participants on completion of the workshop.  Social studies educators and specialists employed by public schools in Louisiana, with a preference for those working with sixth-grade social studies content, are encouraged to apply.  Applications close September 3 at 11:59 p.m. Applicants will be notified of their admission decision by September 7.

Baseball legend Tommy John has died at age 83, leaving behind an impact that extends far beyond the game. After suffering what was once considered a career-ending elbow injury in 1974, John underwent an experimental ligament reconstruction that allowed him to return to pitching. The procedure became known as “Tommy John surgery” and has since given thousands of athletes the opportunity to recover from similar injuries and continue their careers.
