The New Orleans City Council has approved several new safety rules for the 2027 Mardi Gras season aimed at protecting riders and spectators. Among the most notable changes, riders on upper levels of floats will be required to wear safety harnesses, and parade throws cannot weigh more than 3.5 pounds to help reduce injuries. The new regulations also increase fines of up to $1,000 for improperly placed ladders, chairs and other obstructions along parade routes, prohibit marching bands from stopping to perform during parades to keep traffic moving, and allow some branded items to be repackaged and used as parade throws.
