Eleven people became ill and two were hospitalized after consuming raw milk
The Louisiana Department of Health is investigating a group of illnesses believed to be connected to the consumption of raw, unpasteurized milk. Eleven people became ill and two were hospitalized after consuming raw milk.
Health officials report that since late April, 11 individuals have become ill after drinking raw milk. The reported illnesses involve infections caused by bacteria or parasites commonly associated with unpasteurized dairy products. Two people required hospitalization, although no deaths have been reported.
According to investigators, those who became sick reported consuming raw milk obtained from several different dairy operations within Louisiana. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional cases may be identified.
Raw milk is milk that has not gone through the pasteurization process, which uses heat to destroy harmful germs. While some consumers seek out raw milk, health experts warn that it can contain dangerous bacteria and parasites that may cause serious illness. Children, older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems are considered most at risk.
Symptoms associated with these infections can include diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Symptoms may appear several days after exposure and can last for days or even weeks. Anyone who becomes ill after consuming raw milk is encouraged to seek medical attention.
Louisiana law allows raw milk to be sold only for animal or pet consumption. Residents are encouraged to be aware of the potential health risks associated with consuming unpasteurized dairy products and to follow food safety recommendations from public health officials.
