Red River Junior High 4-H member attends summit

A Red River Parish student is gaining leadership experience and learning firsthand how government and community service work through a unique statewide 4-H program.

Johnari Duplantis, a 4-H member from Red River Junior High, recently traveled to Baton Rouge to participate in the 4-H Spark · Action · Change Summit, a three-day, two-night experience designed to help seventh and eighth grade students grow as leaders while exploring civic engagement and service.

The summit gave participants an inside look at how change happens in Louisiana. Youth toured the State Capitol and Old State Capitol, took part in a mock legislative committee meeting, and learned about public service through hands-on activities. Throughout the event, students worked alongside peers from across the state while building communication, leadership, and professional skills through workshops led by the 4-H Citizenship Board, National Conference Delegates, and the Louisiana Youth Advisory Council.

Community service was also a major part of the experience. Participants volunteered at the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank and completed mini service projects, reinforcing the importance of giving back and making a positive impact in their communities.

The group also explored future opportunities during a visit to the LSU College of Agriculture, including stops at the LSU Dairy Store, Tiger Stadium, and a visit with Mike the Tiger. Organizers say the summit helps young people discover potential career pathways while encouraging them to think about how they can lead and serve.

For Johnari, the conference offered a chance to see how leadership extends beyond the classroom. Programs like Spark · Action · Change aim to prepare students to be active, informed members of their communities — proving that through 4-H, youth are going “Beyond Ready” to make a difference today.
