Students from Red River Junior High and Red River High School, along with leadership teams from both campuses, recently had the opportunity to participate in a powerful professional development session titled “Born Winner,” presented by Dr. Hosea Collins.
The presentation is based on Dr. Collins’ book Born Winner and focused on overcoming adversity, handling conflict in healthy ways, and learning how to excel in all areas of life through self-discipline. Students were encouraged to recognize their own potential and understand that success often comes from perseverance and self-belief.
Dr. Collins is a Coushatta High School graduate and a proud product of the Red River Parish School District. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California, but returned home to give back to the community that helped shape him. In addition to leading the professional development session, Dr. Collins also served as a special guest during the RRJH Christmas Program.
During his visit, Dr. Collins expressed deep gratitude to Superintendent Alison Strong and the Red River Parish School District for inviting him back to share his message with local students. He also extended thanks to Dr. Diane Newton for organizing the professional development opportunity and making the event possible.
Each student who attended the session will receive a free copy of Dr. Collins’ book, Born Winner, allowing them to continue reflecting on the lessons discussed. Dr. Collins shared that he looks forward to returning to work with the students in the future, particularly in helping them uncover hidden talents in the performing arts, build self-esteem, address why bullying is not acceptable, and encourage students to pursue their dreams with confidence.
When asked what he hoped students would take away from the session, Dr. Collins emphasized the importance of remembering that circumstances do not define a person’s future, and that every student has the ability to rise above challenges and succeed.
School leaders said the event left a lasting impression and provided students with motivation, encouragement, and practical tools they can carry with them well beyond the classroom.
Thanks to RRJH Principal Lillie McDonald for sharing the information and picture.
