Red River Fire Protection District urges residents: Change your clocks, change your batteries

As Daylight Saving Time ends, the Red River Fire Protection District is reminding everyone to do more than just reset the clocks. Now is the perfect time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, too.

Working smoke alarms are a proven lifesaver — yet they only protect you if they’re properly maintained.

Here are some important safety tips:

  • Test alarms monthly using the “test” button

  • Replace batteries when you change your clocks

  • Replace alarms every 10 years — or sooner if they’re not working

  • Consider upgrading to 10-year sealed battery alarms

  • Practice your home fire escape plan and know two ways out of every room

In 2024, 73 Louisianans lost their lives in home fires — and most of those homes had smoke alarms that were not working.

If you or someone you know needs a smoke alarm, the Operation Save-A-Life program can provide and install them free of charge.

Smoke alarms save lives — but only when they work. Now’s the time to make sure yours do.
