Dense fog blamed in fatal multi-vehicle crash on I-49 in DeSoto Parish

Louisiana State Police say dense fog was a contributing factor in a fatal multi-vehicle crash that occurred early Wednesday morning on Interstate 49.

Around 4:30 a.m. on November 5, Troopers from State Police Troop G responded to a series of crashes near Louisiana Highway 177. The chain-reaction collision claimed the life of 50-year-old Lawrence Irchirl of Natchitoches.

According to investigators, the initial crash involved a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer traveling northbound in heavy fog. The tractor-trailer overturned and blocked the roadway, leading to additional crashes shortly afterward. As vehicles continued approaching the scene, Irchirl’s 2002 Ford F-350 collided with an 18-wheeler that had stopped on the interstate.

Irchirl, who was wearing his seatbelt, died at the scene. Several other drivers involved in the collisions were also properly restrained and sustained only minor injuries. Impairment is not suspected, though standard toxicology samples were collected for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.

State Police urge drivers to use extreme caution when traveling in foggy or low-visibility conditions. Reducing speed, staying focused, and increasing following distance are all critical steps to avoid tragedy.

“Not all crashes are survivable,” Troopers noted, “but making smart choices in difficult conditions can save lives.”
