Governor Jeff Landry signed an emergency measure last week to protect Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for Louisiana residents amid the ongoing federal shutdown.

The action is intended to ensure that eligible households continue receiving food assistance while federal funding remains uncertain. Prior to this decision, state officials had warned that November SNAP benefits could be delayed or halted if no agreement was reached in Washington.

The emergency measure authorizes the state to use available resources to keep benefits flowing temporarily and to expedite the distribution of SNAP funds once federal aid is restored.

Nearly 800,000 Louisianans in more than 390,000 households currently rely on SNAP for monthly groceries.

State agencies will continue to process new applications and maintain eligibility reviews during the shutdown. Officials say additional guidance will be communicated to recipients and retailers in the coming days.
