COUSHATTA – Mansfield running back Terrell Pegues put his early ballot in for District 3-2A Offensive Player of the Year as he led the Wolverines to a 38-30 win at Red River.
Pegues helped Mansfield build a large lead early with his 208 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
The Wolverines (4-2, 1-0 District 3-2A) led 24-8 at half thanks to Pegues and a couple of defensive stands.
Red River (2-4, 0-1) quarterback Malique Smith threw a fourth-down incompletion inside the 10-yard line on one first half possession while a receiver lost a fumble deep in Mansfield territory to halt another drive.
A Pegues 26-yard touchdown run constructed a seemingly safe 38-14 lead in the third quarter, but Red River wasn’t done yet.
The Bulldogs scored the next two touchdowns and converted both two-point conversions, cutting Mansfield’s lead to 38-30 in the fourth quarter.
Red River couldn’t find the tying score as the defending district champions had their five-game winning streak against district opponents snapped Friday.
Smith threw for just 95 yards on 6-of-15 passing but added 81 rushing yards and two rushing scores. Cedric Moody also contributed two rushing touchdowns and 55 yards.
Mansfield piled up 321 rushing yards as Pegues had help from quarterback J.J. Howard and a stable of running backs.
For Red River, it’s the fourth loss by one score, including dropping the three of the last four games.
Mansfield has won two in a row with the Friday win.
The other district game Friday featured Many blowing the doors off Lakeside, 56-13, to snap a three-game losing streak for the Tigers.
