Louisiana Highway 1, often referred to as LA 1, is a significant state highway that stretches diagonally over 430 miles across the state. It runs through the western part of the parish from Caddo Parish to the Natchitoches Parish line. Located along the route are Grand Bayou, Gahagan, Armistead, Hanna and Lake End.
It runs from the southeastern part of Louisiana near Grand Isle to the northwestern corner near the Texas-Arkansas border. LA 1 passes through various landscapes, including wetlands, bayous, and rural areas, offering a scenic route for travelers.
It is a vital corridor for the oil and gas industries, as it connects the Gulf of Mexico to inland refineries. Some sections of the highway, particularly near Grand Isle, are vulnerable to flooding and erosion due to rising sea levels, making infrastructure maintenance a continuous challenge.
In addition to its industrial importance, LA 1 also passes through the heart and many different rich cultures of Louisiana. From the flashy riverboat casinos of Shreveport, to Louisiana’s oldest permanent settlement of Natchitoches, through the red dirt hills and longleaf pines of Kisatchie National Forest, near the capital of Baton Rouge, into the Cajun country of Thibodaux, and along the gulf coast region to its dead end in Grand Isle.
