Weekly roundup: Local basketball teams excelling in summer competition

COUSHATTA – Fresh off an appearance in Division III Non-Select basketball state championship game, the Red River boys basketball team is aiming to build on that foundation with nearly every player returning from the 2023-24 team.

The Bulldogs appear to be doing just that this summer.

Red River compiled a 23-6 record in the summer season, which culminated in a Hoopfest Tour tournament at LSU Shreveport this past weekend.

The Bulldogs knocked off Byrd (56-40) in the opener, fell to Wossman (62-52) but ended the event with a buzzer-beater over Bossier.

Other summer highlights include wins over Natchitoches Central, Jena, West Monroe, and Northwood with an overtime loss to Huntington.

Red River did fall in a championship rematch with Marksville, a 42-40 loss.

While summer basketball doesn’t always translate to success when the temperatures turn colder, there’s no question that Red River is getting reps against championship-caliber programs in preparation for another run at a state title.

Riverdale girls experiencing summer success of their own
The Riverdale Academy girls basketball team is continuing its successful summer with an impressive showing at the Madison-Ridgeland Academy camp in Madison, Miss. In late June.

The Lady Rebels posted a winning record against Class 4A and Class 5A schools, which simulates opponents Riverdale would face deep in the Class 2A playoffs and hopefully in the overall MAIS Tournament.
