MAIS spelling bee

Isabella Stephens

On November twenty eighth I won the MAIS district spelling bee. The spelling bee took place at Riverfield Academy. The drive was about two and a half hours long. It felt like I was traveling forever!

When all the students arrived, we picked a random number. That number was our order to speak in the spelling bee. My number was two, my lucky number. What a coincidence! I was nervously waiting for my grade to be called. Eighth grade went first then seventh and so on.

When the judges announced seventh grade was next, I stood up and walked to the chairs. As I sat down, I realized there were only seven contestants. We began to spell and before you knew it, there were only three people left. I spelled correctly for about two more rounds when suddenly, I messed up. I misspelled lase. I felt terrible. The next two girls got their words incorrect. I was back into the next round. I spelled two more words correctly and knocked one girl out of the round.

The spelling bee was over, and I had placed second! I was thrilled. I get to advance to the MAIS state spelling bee in Jackson Mississippi on January 19, 2024.
