Natchitoches Parish Man Leads Deputies On 16-Mile Pursuit Into Red River Parish

A north Natchitoches Parish man operating a stolen vehicle was arrested on Friday evening after leading Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies on a 16-mile pursuit into Red River Parish according to Natchitoches Parish Sheriff Stuart Wright.

On Friday evening, March 10, 2023, at approximately 10:20pm, Deputies assigned to the NPSO Patrol Operations Bureau were patrolling in the Town of Campti when they observed a tan 2012 Chevrolet Suburban traveling on US-71.

Deputies learned while running the license plate information through the National Crime Information Center that the vehicle was reported stolen in Winn Parish.

Deputies stopped the vehicle on US-71 near Barnum Street.

Deputies say while instructing the driver to exit the vehicle, they recognized the driver to be Owen C. Scallion of Goldonna, La.

Scallion refused to exit, yelling at deputies and drove off.

Deputies say Scallion exited US-71 on a side street leading them on a pursuit over to Lake Street then left onto US-71 traveling north through Campti, then Fairview Alpha and into Red River Parish.  The pursuit continued on US-71 then turned right onto La. Hwy 507 and continued to La. Hwy 784 traveling westbound.

NATCOM 911 Center contacted the Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office advising them of the pursuit requesting assistance.

Red River Parish Sheriff’s Deputies responded to La. Hwy 784 where they were able to successfully deploy a tire deflation device to slowly release the air pressure in the suspect vehicle tires.

The pursuit began to slow for another 2 miles on La. Hwy 784 and lead to a hunting camp road.  Scallion exited the vehicle and ran into some nearby woods.

Deputies issued commands to Scallion to stop, however, he refused. Deputies pursued Scallion on foot into the woods, where he was taken into custody following a brief struggle.

There were no injuries.

Deputies say while searching the wooded area of the foot pursuit, they discovered and seized a blue zip-up bag containing a small amount of suspected methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and a wallet containing Scallion’s identification.

An inventory of the stolen vehicle led to the recovery of three firearms:

*1-Huntsman .58 caliber muzzloader

*1-Hawthorne .22 caliber rifle

*1-Marlin .22 caliber rifle

Owen C. Scallion, 22, of Goldonna, La. was transported and booked into the Red River Parish Jail then released to NPSO Deputies to transport and book into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center charged with Illegal Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Resisting an Officer by Flight, 3-Counts of Illegal Possession of a Firearm by a Person Convicted of a Felony, Resisting an Officer, Reckless Operation of a Vehicle, Possession of CDS II Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, 1-Count of Failure to Appear in the 10th Judicial District Court, No Driver’s License and other traffic offenses.
