Championship Choctaws Honored Under Friday Night Lights

Friday night the Loyola Flyers play at Red River in Pat Strother Stadium at 7:00 pm.  Thirty years ago, the Coushatta Choctaws won their only state football championship.  The 1992 Choctaws will be honored tonight during the game.

Red River High said the gates will open at 6:00 pm.  Admission is $10 and children 4 and under will get in free.

The school, prior to kick off, will recognize the 1992 State Championship Coushatta Choctaw Football Team.  The state Championship team will be meeting at 3:30 pm in the softball parking lot south of the football field.  The team will have a reserved spot for Tailgating.  About 4:00 pm the team will be taken on a tour of our amazing new facilities at Red River High (athletic facilities and beautiful vocational building) along with a tour of our main campus where the Choctaw’s went to class everyday back in 1992.

Look carefully at the Choctaw team photo published by Red River High.  In the upper left corner, you can spot long-time Coach Archie Worsham and Coach Reginald Prelow.  The championship came in Prelow’s first or second year as coach.

Edgar Gaddis was the announcer in the Superdome press box for the championship game.  It was carried on Coushatta’s brand new FM station KSBH.  He remembers the Choctaws had a good team.  Gaddis said, “They had a good halfback that could fly.  He could carry 3 or 4 tacklers 10 yards down the field before they could ever get him down.  And that’s how they won.”

Final score Choctaws 34 and Welsh 27.

The Journal asked Gaddis what was it like in the dome?  “I was impressed because the press section had a full meal lined up.  They fed the press good.  Really treated us as if we were something.”  He added, “It seemed like a big crowd of fans to me.”

Gaddis recalls the players as gentlemen.  “The motel owner where they stayed in New Orleans wrote a letter back to Coushatta High saying that was the nicest bunch of boys who had ever stayed at his motel.  For some of them it was the first time they ever got to New Orleans.  Made me feel proud of the team.”

Local football fans are invited to come early to the game tonight and help honor the 1992 Choctaws at 6:46, just prior to kickoff of Red River vs Loyola.
