Riverdale Basketball Holds Summer League Fundraiser

By Molly Seales

The week of June 21-26 was a busy one for the Riverdale Academy Rebel and Lady Rebel basketball teams, as well as many other local teams.  Games were played each day with concession and admission proceeds going toward Riverdale basketball needs.  Boys’ teams in the league were Riverdale Academy Rebels, Providence Classical Academy Knights, Castor Tigers, Ringgold Redskins, Converse Wildcats, and Ebarb Rebels.  Girls’ teams in the league were Riverdale Academy Lady Rebels, Providence Classical Academy Lady Knights, Castor Lady Tigers, Converse Lady Wildcats, and Ebarb Lady Rebels.

The league was somewhat of a reunion for several men and young men that have either played or formerly coached basketball at Riverdale Academy.  The players are now coaching as well and included Trey Pittman, Nathan Collingsworth, Ty Hester, Taylor Lee, Tanner Lee, and Steven Longino.  It was great for these men to get together and get their players involved in the sport they love.

The Lady Rebels went 6-1 for the week, dropping only one game to Converse. They played PCA and Converse on June 23 and won both contests.  In their first game of the summer, they beat PCA 43-7, and all Lady Rebels saw playing time.  Upcoming seniors Kenley Loftin and Rylee Kate Woodard led the way in the victory.  Kenley was leading scorer with 12 points. She also had 5 rebounds and 2 steals.  Rylee Kate had 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist.  Junior Jessie Kate Cobb added 6 points and sophomore Madison Chamberlin also had 6 points. 8th grader Makayla Pickett added 4 points and had 3 rebounds. 8th grader Mary Claire Jones had 2 points, along with 7 steals, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds.  Newcomer Sky McMullan, a sophomore, added 2 points, along with 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. The Converse Lady Wildcats proved to be harder competition, but the Lady Rebels held on to win 46-42.  Kenley Loftin led the way again with 16 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocked shots, 2 steals and 1 assist.  Sky McMullan joined her in double figures with 12 points, along with 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.  Rylee Kate Woodard wasn’t far behind with 9 points, along with 4 rebounds, assists, and steals. Mary Claire Jones added 5 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.  Jessie Kate Cobb rounded out the scoring with 4 points and an outstanding 10 rebounds.

On June 24, the PCA Lady Knights put up a much better fight, but the Lady Rebels came out on top, 42-27.  All of the Lady Rebels again saw playing time. Rylee Kate Woodard had the hot hands for 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. Freshman Jadyn King added 8 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist.  Mary Claire Jones and Makayla Pickett added 4 points each. Sky McMullan, Madison Chamberlin, Hanna Catherine Huddleston, Julia Grace Riggs, Kacie Harper, and Chloe Jordan added 2 points each. The Lady Rebels also defeated the Ebarb Lady Rebels in a close game, with the final score being 45-41 in favor of Riverdale. Mary Claire Jones poured in 15 points while adding 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Kenley Loftin added 12 points while having 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Sky McMullan had 10 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal.  Jessie Kate Cobb had 6 points and again pulled down 10 boards. She also had 3 assists.  Rylee Kate Woodard added 2 points, rebounds, steals, and assists.  The Lady Rebels dropped their only game of the week to the Converse Lady Wildcats with a score of 50-30.  Sky McMullan led the Lady Rebels in scoring with 6 points. Mary Claire Jones added 5 points, while Jessie Kate Cobb, Jadyn King, and Makayla Pickett had 4 points each.  Rylee Kate Woodard had 3 points, and Kenley Loftin and Kacie Harper each had 2 points.

The Lady Rebels won both of their games on June 25.  The Lady Rebels avenged their loss to Converse from the day before, winning by a score of 26-24.  Kenley Loftin led the Lady Rebels with 8 points and had 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Sky McMullan had 6 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocked shots. Jessie Kate Cobb also had 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal. Rylee Kate Woodard had 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block shot, and took a charge. Mary Claire Jones rounded out the scoring with 2 points, while adding 4 steals, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. The Lady Rebels also beat the Castor Lady Tigers 32-30.  Sky McMullan had the hot hands, scoring 16 points while adding 5 rebounds and 4 steals. The Lady Rebels lost seniors Ronda Black and Pacey Lindsey but looked strong. With the addition of sophomore Sky McMullan and the return of 9th grader Chloe Jordan, expect them to be strong contenders this year in both varsity and JV district and playoff games.
