New Coach Meets the Players

On Tuesday, July 7, Riverdale Academy officially kicked off the 2020 Football season with a team meeting. Approximately 25 athletes and their parents, along with newly named coach, Jared Smelser, attended the meeting held at Riverdale.

Coach Jared spoke to the team and the parents about the upcoming season. He laid out his plans and answered questions from the players and the parents.

I was able to catch up with the coach after the meeting. I asked how things would be different this year due to the pandemic. “Things are going to be much different this year”, says Smelser. “There will be screenings before practice and games. There will be a lot of extra cleaning and sanitizing. Health and safety are priority”.

When asked what he thought a successful season looked like, Smelser said “Progression”. “I want to see them improve as a team, as individuals, and to grow as young men. A successful season isn’t just about winning games.”

Smelser expects to have 16 to 20 players this year. “It’s a tough schedule, but Riverdale players always play hard and they have a lot of heart”.

The boys hit the field first thing Monday morning for practice, and Journal Sports will have the game schedule soon. Riverdale is looking forward to a great season.
