Bulldog Basketball Honoring the Past and Building for the Future

Coach Keith Johnson will be coaching his final season at the helm of the Red River High School Boys Basketball team. Coach Johnson started his career in 1998 with three straight championship appearances in the Class 2A State Championship games (1998, 1999, 2000), winning the 2A State Championship in 1999. His Bulldog Basketball teams also played in State Championship games in 2003 and 2006. Coach Johnson’s teams reached the Top 28 eight times (1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2010, 2018, 2020). In those eight appearances, his teams won a State Championship and were State Runner-Up four times. Under Coach Johnson’s direction, the Red River Basketball team won tournament championships at some of the prestigious tournaments in the area such as the Doc Edwards (CNB Times/Airline), Bossier Invitational, and the Thanksgiving Classic.

Coach Johnson was named the District Coach of the Year nine times and was the Shreveport Times Area Coach of the Year twice. Coach Johnson will retire as Red River High Schools All-Time Winningest Coach with a record of 406 wins and 256 losses at Red River High School. His overall coaching record is 490 wins and 273 losses. His teams advanced to the State Playoffs in 18 of years as a Head Coach.

Coach Johnson not only excelled as a Head Basketball Coach but he mentored many students along the way. Coach Johnson has been an excellent math teacher for his entire career while running a highly successful basketball program.

Dadrian Harris has been selected to be the Co-Head Coach and will spend the year working alongside Coach Johnson.

“Usually schools go through a transition period after losing such a great coach, and we felt that by bringing in Coach Harris to work with Coach Johnson would eliminate the transition year and put our basketball team in the best position to continue the success that Coach Johnson spent so many years building,” stated Athletic Director, Norman Picou.

Dadrian was a standout basketball player for Castor High School where he became the school’s All Time leading scorer and helped lead Castor to its first Top 28 appearance. Dadrian played at Northwestern State University under Coach McConathy and graduated from Northwestern in 2015. He was the Boys Basketball Assistant from 2015 to 2018 and then was the Girls Basketball Assistant at Red River from 2018 to 2020, where he helped the Lady Bulldogs finish as State Runner Up in 2020.

“No way you can replace Coach Johnson and all he has done for Red River Basketball and our community, but we can try to build on it and I truly believe Coach Harris is the man to continue the winning tradition of Red River Basketball. I firmly believe that during this year there will be little transition time as Coach Johnson sets to retire and turn the program over going full steam ahead. I honestly wish I could continue to keep Coach Johnson on as a math teacher even after retirement because he is one of the best around.” stated Mr. Dickey, Principal.
