Early this morning white fluffy snow began falling across Red River Parish. As of 5:00 am most of it is not sticking, however it is making driving dangerous and thrilling most school children.
A winter storm warning was issued Monday by the weather service for most of northwest Louisiana, including our parish. School officials made the call at mid-afternoon not to risk putting school busses on the road in adverse conditions. Red River Parish Schools and Riverdale Academy cancelled classes for today.
Other activities in the parish are also on hold. The Council on Aging is closed today. There will be no delivery of hot meals to their clients or service of hot lunch at the Depot Diner on Front Street.
Yashica Turner told the Journal that the Red River Parish Health Unit will be closed today because of the weather.
State Department of Transportation officials are in the process of closing roadways that have elevated sections such as I-49 and US 80 throughout the Shreveport area. Expect other sections to be closed if icing occurs.
The best advice is stay home if you do not have to get out. The forecast calls for snow to continue falling this morning. Temperatures should fall to the mid 20’s by midday and remain below freezing through noon Wednesday. It will be cold, in the teens overnight Wednesday morning and continuing cold for the next few days. A hard freeze warning has been posted for tonight.
