New officers to preside over the Red River Parish School Board were elected at Monday’s School Board meeting. Superintendent Alison Hughes installed them.
Board member Ricky Cannon was nominated for President and member Gene Longino was nominated for Vice President. Both got a unanimous vote from the board.
Outgoing board President Valerie Cox thanked the administrative staff and the other board members for working closely with her in 2017. As she handed the gavel to Cannon, Cox said, “I have enjoyed the help of all the board and the staff. I really enjoyed my year.”
Cox’s year saw new accountability standards from the state education department being put in place in the parish. She also presided over the board acquiring land adjacent to the Junior High. Also during Cox’s term the citizens approved a $29,000,000 bond issue for new classrooms and expanding sports facilities.
During 2018, Cannon will preside as the board moves forward with development the plans for new facilities and possibly beginning of some construction.
