Students at Red River High received assistance in filling out their applications for college this week. There were counselors from Northwestern State University on site all day to provide guidance.
Dr. Gerra Perkins of NSU brought her students in the Masters in Counseling program to Red River High. She said, “The goal today is to help every student apply to at least one college and the begin the process of applying for financial aid. This year Dr. Perkins brought eight of her students. “I wanted to give them some experience in helping these high school students,” she said.
The high school coordinator of the day’s event was Samantha Sullivan. She said, “The counselors-in-training at NSU help our students with getting their applications completed. The also helped students fill out scholarship applications, and in some cases apply for a waiver of the fees involved.”
Everyone was treated to a delicious lunch prepared and served by Red River High’s Pro Start program. Pro Start instructor Wanda Lemoine said, “This is an opportunity to serve a meal and for my students to demonstrate the skills they have acquired in the program.” The lunch spread included a tossed green salad with the “secret dressing” Pro Start has developed.
