Pastor James Charles Horton

Pastor James Charles Horton, 69 of Coushatta, La entered into enteral rest on December 30, 2022. He was born on June 30, 1953, in Shreveport, La to Ethel Horton Williams and J.C. Harris.

Walk-Thru Visitation will be on Friday, January 6, 2023, from 11am-5pm at Heavenly Gate Funeral Home 1339 Jewell St. Shreveport, La. Funeral Services honoring the life of Pastor Horton will be held  at New Mary Magdalene Baptist Church on Hwy 177 Coushatta, La. Officiating the service will be Apostle Sebastian Babers.

Pastor James Horton graduated from Coushatta High School in 1971. He attended Southern University and Northwestern State University. While attending NSU he was a member of the NSU track team and he pledged Phi Beta Sigma (Bones). He was a salesperson for Winningham Cane River Chrysler-Dodge for many years. James and his wife Mary were the owners of Horton’s Tires for 10 years. He followed his calling into ministry and was elected Pastor of New Magdalene Baptist Church in 1991 and went on to serve for 31 years until his death. In addition, he served as Pastor of Evergreen Baptist Church for 14 years.

Pastor James Horton was a God fearing, loving, strong man and no stranger to hard work. He was always willing to find a way and he  loved his family and friends. Pastor James Horton loved reading his Bible, listening to the gospel, talking, and visiting with family and friends. Most of all he loves his Dallas Cowboys and being a Phi Beta Sigma. He was well known in the Coushatta Community.

Pastor James Horton  was preceded in death by his mother Ethel Williams; father, James Harris; wife, Mary Wilson Horton; two stepsons, Dennis Franklin Sr. and Tony Franklin; grandchild, Tony Williams.

Pastor James Horton leaves behind a legacy of life: step-father, Carl Williams Jr.; daughters, Tina Michelle Horton-Thomas (Percy ) and Kimberly Ann Poche; son, Gerrod Wilson; brother, Robert Earl Horton; sisters, Sandra Taylor, Ethel Mae Bonner (Windell), and Lillie Roberson (Huey); three sisters-in-law, Rosetta Wilson, Mary F. Wilson and Patsy Jones-Wesley; brother-in-law grandchildren; Kenya Horton, Kenneth Thomas (PJ), Dennis Franklin Jr. and Saquisha Chatman; great grandchildren; two special sons Kenneth Fate and Jeremy Horton, special daughter Jessica Hinson-Miller; two special sisters-in-law Clevesta Verdine and Deborah Webb; special brother-in-law Alvin Johnson;  Godchild Gregory Wilson Sr.; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
