Signing Day, Part II

The second of two athletic scholarship signings last Friday was Pierce Kellogg.  He signed to play baseball for Champion Christian College in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  Kellogg is the first Red River athlete to sign a college scholarship in baseball.

Present for the signing was Don Schultheis, the Head Baseball Coach for Champion.  It is the first time in recent memory that the players new coach has come from the school to the signing.

At his signing ceremony Friday evening, Red River Coach Chris Reed said, “We can never replace him.  Pierce has the playing ability to go on to the next level.  He found a way because he wanted it.”  And Coach Reed added, “He taught everyone what it is to work hard.  And he got what he wanted.”

Kellogg wore his Bulldog letter jacket and team baseball cap to the ceremony.  He signed the paperwork in front of his mom and dad, then he removed that letter jacket and cap.  He placed the Red River cap on the table and put on the CCC cap.  Under the jacket, Kellogg was wearing a CCC baseball shirt.

Kellogg told the Journal he will be majoring in sports management.  He said, “I’ll miss the old team.  I hate I gotta leave my guys.  But I will get to see how college baseball works and see that there is life outside Coushatta.”
