Riverdale Baseball Advances to Second Round of Playoffs

The Riverdale Rebels have advanced to the second round of the MAIS Class AA baseball playoffs. The Rebels hosted Rebul Academy on Tuesday, April 26, where the Rebels got a 14-0 win. Since it was a best 2 out of 3 series, the Rebels had to travel to Rebul Academy in Learned, MS, on Friday the 29th for game 2 and game 3, if it was needed. The Rebels took care of business in game 2, winning by a score of 23-2 and advancing to round 2.

On Tuesday, freshman Aston Hester got the start on the mound for the Rebels. He pitched a complete game shut-out, allowing only 3 hits and no earned runs. He struck out 11 of the 17 batters he faced. Aston had a big moment in this game as he reached a great milestone for a freshman. He recorded his 100th career high school strike out in this game against Rebul. His offense gave him great support at the plate. Senior Monroe McCarty went 3 for 3 with 1 RBI and 3 runs scored. Sophomore Ryder Huddleston was on fire, going 3 for 4, including 2 doubles. Ryder had 5 RRIs and scored 2 runs. Senior Jake Messenger was 2 for 3, including a triple, with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Landen Barrett was 2 for 5, including a triple, with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Hester was 1 for 2 with an RBI double and a run scored. Senior Denver Williams was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Junior Ben Almond was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored, while freshman Kaidyn Williams scored 3 runs for Riverdale.

On Friday in Learned, MS, Riverdale junior Colton Massey got the start on the mound for the Riverdale and got his first win as a Rebel. He went the distance, allowing only 2 hits and 2 earned runs. He struck out 6 batters. The bats were as hot as the temperature. Jake Messenger was a beast on the field, making an “Angels in the Outfield” outstanding catch in the 4th inning. He was unstoppable at the plate. Jake went 4 for 4 with 2 triples, 4 RBIs, and 4 runs scored. Monroe McCarty was also unstoppable, going 3 for 3 with a double, a triple, 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored. Freshman Colton Caskey had a great day at the plate, going 2 for 3 with both hits being doubles. Caskey had an RBI and scored 2 runs. Landen Barrett was also 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and 4 runs scored. Kaidyn Williams ripped a double for an RBI, and he scored 2 runs. Ryder Huddleston was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Denver Williams and Ben Almond each had an RBI, and each scored 2 runs for the Rebels. Aston Hester was 1 for 4 and scored a run for Riverdale.

The Rebels took on Columbus Christian at home on Monday, May 2nd.  Final score was Riverdale 10 and Columbus Christian 9 to begin another best 2 out of 3 series and try to make a run for round 3. Games 2 and 3 will be played at Columbus Christian on Thursday.
