Lady Bulldogs Win Two

By Autumn McCoy

The Lady Bulldogs travelled to Ringgold to battle the Lady Chiefs Monday, March 7. Bryn Danzy was on the mound the entire game, leading Red River to the 22-5 victory over Ringgold. The Lady Bulldogs came out ready to redeem themselves from last week’s tough loss against Northwood.

After the first inning they scored 8, only letting the Chiefs score one run. When the Bulldogs were back up to bat in the second inning, they were able to add six more to the score. Harley Sepulvado had an inside the park homerun that contributed to that score, for sure! Ringgold was a bit more successful on offense this time, scoring four more runs, not enough to hold the Bulldogs though.

When the Lady Bulldogs were up to bat for the final time… Shelby Pickett added 3 to the score with her inside the park homerun with two runners on base early in the third inning, and the Chiefs were unable to stop them before another 5 runs were scored with a total of 8 runs in that final inning. Final score Red River 22 and Ringgold 5.

The season home opener was Wednesday, March 9th against Jonesboro-Hodge. The Lady Bulldogs had to play all seven innings to finally wrap up the win. Bryn Danzy was on the mound for a second, full game this week.

The Bulldogs started strong but struggled throughout the game with errors. The young team with only two starting Seniors, Gracie Baker at catcher and Gracie Lindsey at first base, has some growing to do. What they lack in experience, they make up for in determination and heart, though.

Red River  had built a seven point lead by the end of the third inning, but when Jonesboro-Hodge took the field in the top of the fourth, they scored 7 runs before the Bulldogs would finally stop them. Several infield positions were swapped around to try to stop the visiting team from dominating the inning. They only let the Bulldogs score 3 in the bottom of the inning, leaving the score at Jonesboro-Hodge 12 and Red River 15.

The battle of wills came down to the final inning with a final score of Red River 19 and Jonesboro-Hodge 15.  The Lady Bulldogs increased their season record to 3-1.

After already having two wins this week, they travel to Saline Friday, March 11, for a double-header in the Saline Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs play Saline at 2:00 pm and Summerfield at 7:00 pm. Come out and cheer on the ladies in their next home game Monday, March 14, against Many.
