On Friday, December 3, three senior Riverdale Rebel football players had the honor of playing in the Class 1A-2A-3-A MAIS All-Star game at Jackson Prep in Jackson, MS. Riverdale had five players make the all-star team, but only three were able to play due to injuries. Monroe McCarty and Jake Messenger suffered season-ending injuries during district play, but both were named to the all-star team. Fellow seniors Ty Jones, Denver Williams, and Chandler Nettles all played in the game, and senior offensive lineman Kaden Cason was an alternate.
The players reported to Jackson, MS, on Wednesday, December 1st and were divided into two teams-the blue team and the white team. Unfortunately, our Rebels didn’t get to play on the same team. Nettles and McCarty were members of the blue team, while Jones, Williams, and Messenger were members of the white team. The teams only got to have two practices before the game, and it was a very good game with the white team edging out the blue team by a score of 38-27. Before the game began, the team members were given a certificate, photo, and gold token for being chosen for this honor.
All three Rebels who got to play in the game made Riverdale proud! Chandler Nettles was the starting center for the white team and helped his team on the offensive line for most of the game. In typical Denver Williams fashion, the first minute of the game saw a forced fumble that was recovered by Williams. He also had several tackles and assists. Ty Jones, one of the most competitive people I’ve ever met, started off at 100% and never let up, having numerous tackles and assists of his own.
These boys had a fan base of family and friends at the game, as well as many Rebels watching the game live back home. It was a great year for RA football, and we are so proud of these boys and what they have meant to our team for so long. You all will be greatly missed!
