Riverdale Sports Recap for March 30-April 5, 2021

By Molly Seales

The Riverdale Rebels were once again busy with sports this past week.  The baseball game scheduled at PVA for March 30 was a rainout, but PVA came to Riverdale Friday, April 2, for a double header.  PVA is a tough team and is ranked #5 in the state, and the Rebels dropped both games, but they are still showing much improvement.  Unfortunately, the Rebels are in a very tough district. The first game Denver Williams got the only hit for the Rebels. Williams and Paul Messenger turned a beautiful double play after Williams caught a fly ball in left field and threw home to Messenger, who tagged the runner coming home. Messenger, Aston Hester, and Jace Wilhite each had a stolen base the first game. The Rebels got warmed up the first game and did much better the second game. They were patient at the plate, and their patience paid off.  Denver Williams and Matthew Seales each had a good hit the second game, and both of them scored a run.  Paul Messenger also scored for the Rebels. Seales and Hester each had a stolen base in game 2. The Rebels were set to play Central at home this week, but due to illness at Central, those games, including the senior night game, have been rescheduled. The first rescheduled varsity game will be Tuesday, April 13, at 2:00 P.M. and will be followed by a JV game. Friday, April 16, will be baseball senior night. Presentations will start at 2:00 P.M. and a varsity double header will immediately follow.

The Riverdale Golf Team hosted a tournament at the Coushatta Country Club on Monday, April 5, and the Rebels placed 2nd in this tournament. The golf team will travel to Franklin Academy in Winnsboro on Monday, April 12, for the next tournament.

The JV District Track Meet will be held on Monday, April 12, at Silliman Institute in Clinton, LA.  The Varsity District Track meet will be held on Thursday, April 15, and will also be at Silliman Institute.

The All MAIS Basketball Teams were announced this week. Congratulations to senior Ronda Black, senior Parker Almond, and junior Ty Jones for being named to the Class 1A All MAIS team. We are proud of you!

It was a big week for the Riverdale Tennis Team as they played district matches against Tensas. The girls’ doubles’ team of Lilly Guillot and Jadyn King continued their winning streak with 2 district victories.  They have won 4 matches in a row. The girls’ doubles’ team of Pacey Lindsey and Charity Williamson got their first district win last week. Emma Clemons won all of her singles matches last week and also teamed up with Brennan Edie to get a mixed doubles win. The mixed doubles team of cousins Paul Messenger and Mary Claire Jones got another mixed doubles win, while the mixed doubles team of Sidney Free and Will Jones also got a win. Another mixed doubles team of Luke Greer and Lilly Guillot got a win last week, while cousins Paul Messenger and Will Jones got a boys’ doubles’ victory. Luke Greer and Will Jones won both of their boys’ doubles’ district matches. The tennis team will be back in action at the Coushatta Country Club on April 13.

The Riverdale Fishing Team had a great showing at the Red Oak Tournament on Saturday, April 3rd. The team of AJ Procell and Karson Milner-Dortlon had 5 fish, with a total weight of 8.67 pounds.  They also had the biggest bass of the day, which weighed 3.13 pounds. Colton Caskey and Ryan Procell also caught 5 fish, for a total weight of 7.41 pounds. The brother/sister team of Madalynn and Jace Baxley also caught 5 fish, for a total weight of 6.63 pounds. Jax Hearold and Kane Milner-Dortlon reeled in 1, which weighed 1.24 pounds.  Jase Johnson and Ryder Shaver were not able to catch any that day, but they represented Riverdale well.  Congratulations to our fishing team!
