Every year the local VFW Post and Auxiliary select an Elementary, Junior High and High School Teacher of the year. They are selected from nominations submitted by schools in Red River and Bienville parishes. The winners this year came from Red River public schools.
Monday night the VFW Teachers of the Year were recognized at the Red River Parish School Board meeting. This year was a hard decision as always. However the teachers that were picked proved to show that they had what it took to represent the schools.
Superintendent Alison Hughes was joined by VFW Post Commander Barry McCoy and Auxiliary President Heather McCoy to make the presentations.
The Elementary Teacher of the year is From the elementary was Tiffany Williams. She is a 5th grade teacher. Williams is known for always helping the students to learn and grow as children and is always ready to face the challenges that can come up with teaching a child. She was honored to receive this award as she is very passionate about her job.
From Junior high was Dustie Gibson who is an 8th grade teacher. She is a fun loving teacher who is known for her passion in teaching English. Gibson was described as hardworking and was honored to receive this award.
The VFW High School Teacher of the Year is Deborah Lawhorn who is a 10th to 12th grade teacher. She is mostly known for teaching World History and World geography. In addition to be selected at the local level, Lawhorn’s entry was submitted to VFW District 12 (Northwest Louisiana) where she was selected District Teacher of the Year.
The Coushatta VFW Post and Auxiliary receive nominations each fall. The teachers selected are announced each January.
