Football Player Signs Scholarship

By Hayley Loe

On February 11th Markell Washington signed a football scholarship with East Texas Baptist University. He played wide receiver as #5 on the Red River football team.

Washington said plans on majoring in nursing in college as well as playing football.

His Coach John Bachman had a few words of wisdom for Markell.  Bachman said “ You will always be a student-athlete before an athlete-student so even though you’ve had an amazing opportunity through football you need to focus on learning all you can in college. I live 30 minutes away from ETBU and I hope I’ll be able to come out and watch you play football for that amazing team. Once a dawg always a dawg never forget where you came from.”

At the end of the signing Washington said, “I wanna say it doesn’t matter where you go or at what level they are, it always matters about the education and bettering yourself and continuing to learn and grow.”

Many students and teachers came down to watch Markell sign onto the college along with both his mom and dad by his side.

After the signing, the High School posted, “Red River High School Athletics, Superintendent Allison Hughes, Coach John H Bachman, Coach Chad Harkins, Coach Earl Martin, Coach Chris Sibley, Coach Harry Gary, Coach John McDonald, Coach Dadrian Harris, Coach Rodney Bagley, Coach Flowers, Principal JC Dickey III, AD Norman Picou,  and the entire Red River Bulldogs football family, and all our family and friends, thanks for sharing in this day and setting it aside for Markell, as he prepares for his next stage of academics and athletics, we appreciate you all ! Heartfelt Thanks.

Principal JC Dickey commented, “The 4th Bulldog this year moving on playing in college.  Congrats to this young man, he is an amazing athlete and a better man.  He is a great leader and will be a huge success way beyond football.”
