At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday August 4, 2019, a Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office (RRPSO) deputy was patrolling along U.S. Hwy 371 just north of LA Hwy 786. The deputy observed a vehicle with its lights off parked in the driveway of an abandoned house. As the deputy stopped to investigate, the lights came on and the car proceeded toward U.S. Hwy 371.The deputy activated his emergency blue lights and initiated a traffic stop to investigate the suspicious vehicle.
The vehicle was occupied by a male driver and two passengers, one male and one female. The driver, identified as Mark Willis, explained that he had pulled into the driveway because of mechanical issues with his automobile. Skeptical of his story and noticing a trailer loaded with lumber connected to the vehicle, the deputy advised him of his Miranda Rights. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the suspects had entered the adjoining property and removed the lumber from inside the vacant residence without the owner’s permission.
The male passenger, identified as Bryan Basinger, refused to cooperate with deputies. While searching the vehicle, deputies recovered a glass pipe typically used for smoking methamphetamine in the area where Basinger was seated. The device, which contained a brownish-white residue, was collected as evidence.
The female passenger, identified as Susan Willis, admitted knowledge of the burglary. It is suspected she remained in the vehicle during the burglary serving as a “look-out”.
After confirming with the owner of the property that no one had permission to be on the site, all three subjects were taken into custody without incident and transported to the Red River Parish Jail for booking.
