The talk of the parish was the storm that blew through late Wednesday and early Thursday. A very large area of intense storms moved slowly across northwest Louisiana.
There were reports of high damaging winds or perhaps a tornado in neighboring parishes. Red River was lucky. The Journal received only reports of minor damage and some trees blown down in a couple of places. Our neighbors to the south and northeast had it much worse.
Red River did get heavy rainfall in several storms. Reports of two to four inches were received. The Red River is high, near crest, however there were very few reports of water high enough to be over the roadway.
Another item The Journal is keeping an eye on is the train derailment in south Caddo Parish. Highway 1 is still blocked due to rail cars in the roadway. A state police spokesperson said there is a possibility the highway will be open on Friday or Saturday.
One delaying factor is the weather. Another is a hazmat issue. State police are overseeing the removal of material from two of the derailed cars. There have been no leaks, however it will take time for that material to be taken off the overturned cars properly.
Once the train cars are cleared from Highway 1, the state transportation department will have to clean the highway and inspect to assure that no damage was done to the roadway.
